Crisis = Danger + Opportunity

Yesterday, it was hard to cancel my in-person coaching and psychotherapy appointments. The global public health pandemic instructions are that we do not travel unless necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For me, there is almost nothing like sitting across from someone, seeing and feeling the whole picture of their presence and energy. The risk of my clients traveling on public transportation or even in cabs was very disconcerting so canceling was the only option.

My sessions yesterday were a pleasant reminder: Phone conversations can be an even more powerful tool for showing up and speaking about what’s important.

For now, all my appointments will be done virtually — phone, Skype or whatever. Most of my brain training clients have “at-home” tools they will use and we’ll keep appointments to help stay on task, reduce stress and/or discuss anything else that’s important. If you’re a client and need more tools to make the best use of this off-time, let’s talk.

Chicago is closing schools, churches, and even libraries. It is the most vulnerable I worry about especially people experiencing homelessness who spend days in the libraries to stay warm. I’m concerned about solutions for them and will try to help however I can. One way is a contribution to area homeless shelters. Please join me in supporting community resources.

Chinese symbol Crisis (Danger + Opportunity)

Snapping out of the surreal sense of all that’s happening, I invite you to see this time of social distancing and public health crisis as a teacher. The Chinese symbol for crisis is a combination of danger and opportunity. There is opportunity for us now. These are times that will reveal who we are and who we want to be. Suggestions to maximize this time:

  • Aspire to proceed with your highest self. Be the person you would be proud to be.

  • Water the seeds in your soul that are generous, kind, and have compassion.

  • Be mindful of what’s positive in the midst of chaos; that will fuel your resilience.

  • Be useful, don’t waste time.

  • Gather resources and make sure you have all the practical issues of food, medicine and any prescriptions you need covered.

  • Spend some time in restorative self-care. Treat yourself to good scents and foods.

  • Reach out to others. Check-in on friends. Many are afraid but don’t need to feel alone.

  • Take time for prayer, meditation, exercise, and laughter.

  • Catch up on things you have wanted to do but never had time.

    Together, let’s be the peace and wisdom our world needs right now. ♥️

    With love,

    Diane
